As quantum computing advances and regulatory timelines tighten, organizations are under growing pressure to prepare their infrastructure for post-quantum cryptography. Rather than replacing entire technology estates, enterprises are looking to retrofit existing systems while building longer-term quantum security roadmaps.
Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co. and EigenQ Inc. are working through the channel to address the needs of customers in defense, national security, critical infrastructure and regulated industries. The partnership is aimed at sectors including healthcare and financial services as organizations prepare for emerging quantum security requirements, according to Rika Nakazawa (pictured, left), chief growth officer of EigenQ.
“You say the word quantum in a room and you’ll have a million different ideas of what that means,” Nakazawa said. “But when it comes back down to the quantum security piece, it’s really about being able to do this in a frictionless and seamless way for the customer.”
Nakazawa and Robin Braun (right), vice president of AI business development at HPE, spoke with Krista Case at Black Hat USA, during an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio. They discussed preparing for post-quantum cryptography as regulatory timelines accelerate and retrofitting existing infrastructure for quantum-resistant security. (* Disclosure below.)
Making quantum security practical
HPE has been looking at quantum for some time and is one of the founding members of the Quantum Scaling Alliance. The company has also been advancing quantum technologies through HPE Labs, with a continued focus on both the technology and its security implications, Braun noted.
“One of the reasons we love the partnership with EigenQ is looking at how do we take all of this discussion, all of this activity and be able to make it more practical for the people who now suddenly have these regulatory requirements that they weren’t necessarily anticipating,” Braun said. “How can you bring that down?”
EigenQ’s answer is a PCIe-based retrofit solution that can be added to existing HPE servers without interrupting performance or requiring a full infrastructure replacement. Delivered through the distribution channel alongside partners including TD SYNNEX, the approach gives organizations a way to achieve compliance with emerging mandates without waiting for next-generation hardware cycles, Nakazawa noted.
“Nobody can rip and replace their entire estate over the next six months or nine months — that’s just not practical,” Braun said. “What can they start to do as they look at retrofitting, and what can they start to do as they’re planning their next purchases to be able to include the EigenQ as an option in the HPE server where you’re not interrupting performance?”
