California philanthropists pick up Hillsboro Beach mansion for $37M

A couple of California philanthropists snagged a mansion in Hillsboro Beach’s coveted Millionaire’s Mile for $37.1 million, making it one of Broward County’s priciest residential sales this year.

Richard and Mary Compton, trustees of the Compton Family Trust, bought the 13,000-square-foot property at 999 Hillsboro Mile for $2,875 per square foot.

The seller was Wilson Terra Firma LP, an affiliate of Canadian commercial real estate firm Wilson Terra Firma Holdings. The firm bought the property for $19.2 million in 2023, when the oceanfront mansion was under construction.

The home, which sits on a 0.7-acre lot, was completed in 2024. It was listed by Marco Terminesi of RE/MAX Properties and bought with Heather Lefebvre of Adache Real Estate.

The move-in-ready residence has six bedrooms, six bathrooms and two half-bathrooms. It includes a 74-foot saltwater lap pool, an eight car-garage, a commercial-grade elevator and a 100-foot dock.

The Comptons are known for their philanthropic contributions in Santa Barbara, where they have a home, according to property records. In 2023, they donated $65 million to The Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital Foundation in what was the single largest gift in its 135-year history, the hospital said. Richard Compton co-founded NuSil Technologies in 1979. He served as CEO until retiring in 2015.

The Comptons’ latest purchase nears Hillsboro Beach’s all-time home sale record, set in 2018, when the Playa Vista Isle estate at 935 Hillsboro Mile sold for $42.5 million, The Real Deal previously reported.

The transaction came close to Broward County’s most-expensive residential sale this year. That record is held by an oceanfront mansion at 1105 to 1107 Hillsboro Mile, which tech and media executive Mason Paul Slaine bought from billionaire and former Meridian Health Plan CEO David Cotton for $40.9 million in July.

This year brought a slew of pricey deals in Broward County. In May, WeatherTech founder David MacNeil parted with his Fort Lauderdale mansion for $26 million, right before Hard Rock executive James Allen, and his wife, Shelly, bought a waterfront estate in the city for $35.8 million.

In August, Dov Stark’s Fort Lauderdale spec home landed a contract for $51 million. The deal is expected to close in January.

Two proposed trophy estates have also recently hit the market, becoming Broward County’s most expensive listings. They include a 20,000-square-foot Fort Lauderdale estate dubbed The Manor at Banyan Point, listed for $80 million, and a Las Olas megamansion with 548 feet of waterfrontage listed for $100 million.
