Earlier this year we learned that both Google co-founders purchased homes in Miami, part of the influx of the billionaire exodus from California and New York that our region has benefited from.
Now Bloomberg and other outlets are reporting that Alphabet is more than quadrupling its office space in Miami this year shortly after co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin bought homes in the area.
Alphabet signed a lease this spring to expand its 10,000 square feet at 1450 Brickell to 45,000 square feet, Bloomberg first reported according to its sources. Those sources told Bloomberg the expansion was partly driving by the residential real estate purchases. Google has not commented on the news.
While the enlarged Miami office space of course pales in comparison to the tech giant’s office space in California and New York, it’s a welcome sign that Google intends to expand its business presence in Miami at a time when the Miami tech community is growing, welcoming founders and investors. Brin surprised the tech community by speaking at a hackathon at The LAB Miami in March.
Over the past year, Page has bought $188 million in properties in Miami’s Coconut Grove neighborhood, including a waterfront compound purchased for $101.5 million, according to Real Deal Miami’s report. In March, Brin paid $51 million for LVMH CEO Michael Burke’s waterfront Miami Beach home. They both remain on Google’s board and retain majority voting control of the firm. Google established its Miami office a decade ago, according to Real Deal.
In February, Palantir announced its headquarters relocation from Denver to Miami after CEO Alex Karp had quietly bought residential real estate here last year, and other billionaires including Mark Zuckerberg have also purchased residential real estate.
