GL Homes won site-plan approval for an eight-story multifamily development near the Sawgrass Mills shopping mall in Sunrise, where it is planning a massive mixed-use development of highrises.
The Sunrise City Commission voted Tuesday night to approve the 294-unit project’s site plan. It spans 5.5 acres within a vacant, 32-acre property along West Sunrise Boulevard, where GL Homes is pursuing the master-planned project, called Radius at Sawgrass.
Sunrise-based GL Homes, led by President Misha Ezzrati, paid $34 million to Stiles Corporation in 2019 to acquire the bulk of the property, which is southwest of the intersection of West Sunrise Boulevard and Northwest 136th Avenue. Fort Lauderdale-based Stiles paid $15.6 million for the property in 2005 and had planned residential, office and commercial space there.
The Sunrise City Commission also approved minor amendments to GL Homes’ master plan for Radius at Sawgrass, formerly known as Westerra Phase 1.Â
The plan allows as many as 750 high-rise residential units and up to 300 hotel rooms, plus 750,000 square feet of office space and 50,000 square feet of commercial space.
It divides the property into five sections along the south side of West Sunrise Boulevard. The approved multifamily building would rise next to an existing lake.Â
The multifamily site plan shows a mix of one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments. Planned amenities include a fitness center, swimming pool, yoga lawn, dog wash and pickleball court. GL Homes now has 18 months to obtain a building permit for the multifamily development before the site-plan approval expires.
Just north of the apartments, the developer plans 300 hotel rooms, 7,000 square feet of commercial space and 250,000 square feet of office space “inclusive of a flight training center,” according to a city staff report.
The South Florida Business Journal reported in 2024 that New York-based Atlas Air Worldwide, a leading air cargo carrier, may lease space at the Sunrise development from GL Homes for a flight training and simulator facility and a 300-room hotel for corporate housing.
Neither GL Homes nor Atlas Air responded to requests for comment.
