Skip the account and you lose more than coupons. Safeway, for one, keeps both its member prices and its digital-only coupons for members of Safeway for U, its free loyalty program. Check out without an account and you pay the regular price on anything sold at a member price.
Timing is looser than it sounds. Kroger’s coupons go live the moment you tap Load to Card, so one clipped while you wait in line still comes off when checkout reads your card or phone number.
With the account set up, two more layers stack on the same trip. A rebate app like Ibotta pays you back on specific products after you buy them, and your card earns rewards on whatever total is left after the discounts.
Before every trip, run the same three steps:
- Clip every coupon in the store’s app for things you already buy.
- Add the week’s offers in the rebate app, and link your store account where the app supports it so qualifying purchases earn cash back without a receipt photo. Ibotta links with Walmart and Dollar General accounts, among others.
- Pay with a card that earns a grocery bonus at that store. Amex, Capital One, and Chase all leave superstores like Walmart and Target out of their grocery categories, so those runs earn only the card’s standard rate.
Read a rebate’s terms when a coupon covers the same item. At Walmart and Dollar General, Ibotta won’t pay on a product that also took a manufacturer coupon, paper or digital, so use whichever saves more.
Check the receipt before you leave the register. Kroger’s receipts label each digital coupon ecpn, and its help page tells you to ask the cashier when a loaded discount didn’t come off.
