ModMed reshuffles leadership as this South Florida healthtech pioneer doubles down on AI

As South Florida continues to build its profile as a rising technology and startup hub, Boca Raton-based ModMed is betting that artificial intelligence will define its next chapter. The healthcare software company, one of the region’s established tech success stories, is restructuring its leadership to put AI at the center of its business, elevating co-founder Dan Cane to the newly created role of chief AI officer.

The move also marks a leadership transition at the company, with Joe Harpaz becoming sole CEO after three years sharing the role with Cane. Fellow co-founder Dr. Michael Sherling will continue leading clinical and strategic initiatives as chief medical and strategy officer, while Celine Kaiser takes over as chief operating officer, expanding her oversight to include product management, customer success and ModMed’s revenue cycle management business.

Founded in 2010 and one of South Florida’s pioneers in healthtech, ModMed (formerly Modernizing Medicine) developed a cloud-based electronic health records system for medical specialties. In 2025, private equity firm Clearlake Capital bought a majority stake in ModMed.

Today the company serves nearly 50,000 healthcare providers nationwide, and is seeking tallo position itself as a leader in what it calls the “AI-Powered Practice.”

ModMed’s leadership moves come as healthcare technology companies globally race to integrate artificial intelligence into physician workflows, administrative operations and patient communications. For South Florida, from Miami through ModMed’s home in Palm Beach County, healthtech companies are a major force in innovation, and this year in particular, the sector is leading in venture capital attraction.

“AI is changing what medical practices should expect from their technology partner, and ModMed is striving to lead that change,” said Harpaz. “Dan and Michael built ModMed by bringing technology and medicine together to solve problems that others had accepted as inevitable. The next chapter of healthcare IT calls for that same ambition. We are putting our founders directly at the forefront of our most important AI initiatives and organizing the company to turn that innovation into meaningful results for our customers.”

Both co-founders will remain members of ModMed’s Board of Directors.

As chief AI officer, Cane will lead AI strategy across both products and internal operations, while taking direct executive responsibility for ModMed’s revenue cycle management AI platform. The company said the technology is intended to help medical practices manage claim denials, accelerate reimbursement and reduce administrative burdens tied to billing and collections.

“We founded ModMed because we believed technology could fundamentally improve the way physicians practice medicine and run their practices. AI expands what we can deliver on that promise,” Cane said. “I’m excited to continue focusing my time on building that future with our teams — from helping practices navigate the complexity of reimbursement to reimagining how we develop and deliver technology.”

Sherling will continue leading clinical AI development efforts, including enhancements to ModMed Scribe, the company’s AI-powered clinical documentation tool. According to ModMed, the product has supported nearly 3 million patient visits since launching 11 months ago.

The company is also investing heavily in AI-driven patient engagement. Following its acquisition of Bonsai Health earlier this year, Bonsai co-founder Luke Kervin will lead patient engagement product development, while co-founder Travis Schneider will serve as general manager of patient engagement. The company plans to roll out an agentic AI platform in 2027 designed to automate front-office interactions and simplify communications between patients and providers.

Paul Huber, partner and managing director at Clearlake Capital, said the firm remains confident in the company’s leadership and AI-focused strategy. “ModMed’s growth momentum is stronger than ever,” Huber said, “and we are proud to back this team as they work to build the premier AI company for healthcare.”
